TWIN is an annual program that honors Anne Arundel County women for their outstanding achievements in business and their positive impact in the community. It is also an opportunity to recognize county employers committed to empowering women. Since TWIN’s inception in 1986, more than 700 women have been chosen for the award by their companies and the community. Each honoree is recognized at an annual event and invited to participate in YWCA activities throughout the year. The YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County will celebrate honorees’ contributions to their field and their vision for enhancing the lives of those in our community. Nominating and sponsoring companies will be spotlighted for their commitment to the professional advancement of women and their dedication to the community at large through acknowledgement of the positive impact of these women visionaries.

Community Education Series

The YWCA is hosting domestic violence information sessions throughout the county. Sessions will discuss signs of domestic violence, how to get help, and the resources available to residents.

The YWCA hosts community education sessions surrounding the topic of domestic violence. These sessions run 90 minutes and are facilitated by a crisis intervention expert from the YWCA with potential involvement from Anne Arundel County Police domestic violence officers. The purpose of these sessions hosted throughout the county is to bring an awareness to the signs of domestic violence, the resources available, and an opportunity to ask questions and/or discuss the issues that impede a victim from leaving their abuser. One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence at some point in her life with the average age being 24-37. This is an issue that greatly impacts our community and this is an opportunity to assist people regain their safety, independence, and strong sense of self. These are open forums with a presentation, handout/booklet identifying the signs, and opportunity to meet the YWCA. No registration required. Call the YWCA at 410.626.7800 regarding any questions. In-kind Donations

In-kind donations from the for-profit business community are instrumental in sustaining the non-profit sector. Based on experience, I would guess that approximately 10% of the average non-profit’s operating costs are not covered by grant revenue. Some level of this is achieved through the financial development (fundraising) efforts of the organizations. The reality, however, is that we are living in a “do more with less” climate and non-profit organizations are having to become far more savvy on how they provide more than the bare minimum. This is where the partnership between for-profit and non-profit business community has really shown great promise and is, perhaps, one of the few positive things that have come out of a poor economy.

Whether it is event catering, printing, graphic design, or web hosting, there are many areas where the for-profit business sector can provide significant cost savings, allowing those funds to be redirected to direct client support. This has been instrumental for the YWCA and has stretched the funding and resources available to YWCA clients. If you have a service you can provide or are a subject matter expert in an area related to the work of a non-profit, contact the Executive Director of the YWCA or Fay Mauro at the Volunteer Center of Anne Arundel County.
