Position Overview:
Working under the supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator, the Star Academy First Assistant provides support for our Star Academy after-school program. While many position responsibilities are outlined, it is understood that specific directives will be provided by the Youth Services Coordinator with insight from the Director of Programs and Executive Director as they pertain to the effective and efficient operation of the organization.
The Star Academy First Assistant position supports the Site leader with program activities. This position can supervise staff, interns, or volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Work day is Tuesday-Thursday, four hours per day;
- Travel to various middle schools in Anne Arundel County to assist in program;
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings;
- Attend four field trips per year;
- Report suspected child abuse;
- Assist Site leader in implementation of Second Step anti-violence curriculum;
- Help students with homework;
- Fill in for site leader in absence;
- Ability to teach and lead group sessions at least once per week;
- Ability to contribute to solving problems;
- Ability to participate in room preparation, cleanup, etc;
- Attend committee meetings and YWCA staff meetings, as required;
- Prepare lessons, meal calendars, field trips;
- Others duties as assigned by Site Leader.
Non-essential Job Functions
- Performs all other duties as deemed necessary by the Youth Services Coordinator, the Director of Programs or the Executive Director;
- Report to YWCA main office to pickup snacks, meals, supplies, etc.
- Attend open houses, workshops, conferences that relate to program.
Requirements:
- Appropriate child development courses to meet state requirements. (90 hours certification) or BA degree in Human Services, Educations or related field;
- Prior experience working with young children ages 9-14. (400 hours);
- Must be at least 21 years old;
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision;
- Ability to work with people of diverse educational, culture and economic backgrounds;
- Ability to bend and lift 40 pounds, or the equivalent of a box of brochures;
- Availability of a vehicle and a current driver’s license;
- Commitment to the mission and vision of the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
- Must pass a background check;
- Must be CPR/First Aide Certified.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to remain calm when others are in crisis;
- Ability to maintain records according to YWCA standards;
- Knowledge of local resources and referrals;
- Committed to continuous improvement.
- Availability of a vehicle and a current driver’s license.
