Position: THERAPIST
Status: Part Time (15 hours/week)

Summary:
To provide psychotherapy and psycho-education to victims of domestic violence and may provide general counseling services.

Relationships:
A. Responsible to: Therapists are directly supervised by the Clinical Director, under the direction of the Director of Programs, but is ultimately responsible to the Executive Director.

B. Employees Supervised: Therapists do not supervise any other employees. She/he may supervise unpaid interns and volunteers.

C. Inter-relationships: Therapist works independently and in cooperation with other therapists and staff. She/he will also develop working relationships with staff of Arden House, Legal Services, and other programs of the YWCA.

Responsibilities and Standards:
1.0 Performs case management and crisis intervention for clients. (%)
1.1 Performs a lethality assessment and assists clients in developing a safety plan.
1.2 Provides information to clients about related support services including, but not limited to: legal options and legal assistance; child therapy and batterer intervention services, career services, Department of Social Services, medical care, etc.
1.3 Refers clients for psychiatric services as necessary.
1.4 With client permission, communicates and coordinates with other professionals in the community and government agencies providing services to the client.
1.5 Performs telephone intakes with perspective clients. Provides information and referrals as necessary.
1.6 Conducts support group(s) for victims of domestic violence and/or facilitate abuser intervention group(s).
1.7 Assists other YWCA staff members with clients in crisis as necessary.

2.0 Provide individual psychotherapy to victims of domestic violence. (%)
2.1 Educates clients about power and control dynamics and the cycle of violence.
2.2 Performs individual assessment of client needs.
2.3 Develops with the client a treatment plan that includes measurable objectives.

2.4 Meet with client on a pre-established regular basis and works together with client toward those goals.
2.5 Assesses clients changing needs and progress on an ongoing basis.
2.6 Terminates or re-contracts with client when objectives have been met or as necessary.

3.0 Pursues ongoing professional support and development activities (%).
3.1 Meets regularly with clinical director for case staffing.
3.2 Attends required meetings including weekly staff meetings and case assignment sessions.
3.3 Participates in professional development workshops and training.
3.4 Maintains a client load of 60% clinical hours or the equivalent agreed upon in supervision with the Clinical Director.

4.0 Maintain accurate and timely records of delivery and client services.

5.0 Assist in the overall agency provision of services.

6.0 Performs all other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director or designee.

Qualifications and Skills:
A. Education and training: Minimum of MS/MA/MSW in social work, psychology, counseling or pastoral counseling. Licensure in the state of MD, preferred.

B. Experience: A minimum of 2 years of counseling or social work experience in the field of domestic violence, sexual assault, or crisis intervention is preferred.

C. Knowledge and abilities:

  • Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Knowledge of counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical treatment techniques for PTSD and trauma.
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to domestic violence.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment.
  • Ability to exhibit behavior consistent with social work/counseling ethics at all times.
  • Ability to provide effective and immediate crisis intervention for clients.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to make effective educational presentations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, co-workers, and supervisors and representatives of community agencies.
